“It’s all in the Egg” – Evonik Africa celebrates World Egg Day

More that one hundred attendees this year

The World Egg Day (W.E.D.) initiative began in Austria in 1996 and every year since then, in October, countries all around the world celebrate the day. With an estimated 1 billion underfed and undernourished people across the world, the aim is to educate people that eggs are an excellent, affordable and alternate source of high quality protein, with the potential to feed the world.

This year, Evonik Africa decided to turn the traditional event into more of a “Family Fun Day” and the results were worthwhile. “In previous years, W.E.D. was essentially an Animal Nutrition event due to our association with Macubeni Chicken Farm, but we decided it was worth roping in all EA employees so in future it will be an annual family day” says Heinrich Ruth, Vice President MEA, Evonik Animal Nutrition. With an attendance of 106 people including local team members, their families, Evonik partners and children from Adelaide and Tlhokomelo schools, the turnout was the highest ever. The Lory Park Animal & Owl Sanctuary was the chosen venue where the children were split into 5 groups and got to feed rabbits and interact with owls, reptiles, lions and tigers.

Deniz Akay, Managing Director of Evonik Africa said “This is the first time myself and my family are attending, but it certainly will not be the last”. The event closed with a word of thanks from Andreas Woerster from Utho Ngathi expressing his gratitude for the ongoing support and commitment Evonik demonstrates to uplift underprivileged and disadvantaged citizens; particularly the children.
